The economy of Newfoundland and Labrador had traditionally been based on the fishery, but during the past century has been supplemented by natural resources-based activities such as mining and pulp and paper. In the late 1970's the Hibernia oil field was discovered on the Grand Banks, off the coast of Newfoundland. The ongoing oil discovery process and the service industry built around production have greatly raised the economic activity in the province, especially for the eastern region. In fact, the federal government recently declared that Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the most economically stable provinces in Canada.
