Practicing in Newfoundland and Labrador presents physicians with two options: practicing within a health authority or setting up an independent practice in a private clinic. Many private practice physicians have applied for and have been granted 'privileges' to work cooperatively with their local hospital.
As NL has a medical school, many physicians also participate in providing instruction to medical students, clinical clerks, residents and international medical graduates completing the Clinical Skills Assessment and Training Program (CSAT). The largest of the residency programs is Family Medicine, which is also the greatest service need in the province. Of course, there are many opportunities to participate and contribute to the development of other health professionals through our schools of pharmacy, nursing, social work, psychology and others.
