Physician – Hospitalist and Family Practice

Eastern Health is currently recruiting a full-time Hospitalist.  The successful applicant will be based at Carbonear General Hospital and will serve the Rural Avalon region of Eastern Health, a catchment area of greater than 45,000 people, whose geography encompasses a portion of the Avalon Peninsula.  This position will commence on December 3, 2018.

Carbonear General Hospital’s Family Medicine Department is comprised of a total of four full-time salaried hospitalists accountable for the provision of comprehensive health care services to patients receiving care. The services include: chronic disease management, long term care, palliative care, respite care, prenatal care, emergency care / patient stabilization and transfer, operating room assist, general practice oncology, minor surgery and acute in-patient care.  Physicians will be expected to share 24 hour on-call services and general practice clinics.

The Carbonear General Hospital has 70 acute care beds. Services include; Anesthesia, Chemotherapy, Family Practice, General Surgery, Gynecology, Obstetrics, ICU, Internal Medicine, Laboratory, Palliative Care, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Pathology, Ultrasonography and 24-hour Emergency (Category A). Other services, include; Nursing, Nutritional, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Social work, Diabetic education and visiting specialty clinics; include, Audiology, Neurology and Opthamology. 

While there is support from Internal Medicine and Surgical services, the successful candidate will be adept at independent management of patients with multiple co-morbidities.  Strong value is placed on communication skills with patients and families.





Previous experience in chemotherapy assessments would be an advantage. The successful applicant will have received permission from CPSNL to work independently on call.

Hours of Work:35 Hours per week plus on call obligation

The salary for this position is paid in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement between the Government of NL and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association is $158,922 to $189,243.
