Eastern Health invites expressions of interest for a full-time Hospitalist / Family Physician to join a group of four full-time salaried Hospitalist in Carbonear. The successful applicant will have dual accountabilities between the Carbonear General Hospital and a family practice clinic located in Western Bay, ~25 km from Carbonear. The successful applicant will participate in a call rota shared among the group offering two to three days in Western Bay on a weekly basis.

The Carbonear General Hospital serves the Rural Avalon region of Eastern Health, a catchment area of greater than 45,000 people, whose geography encompasses a portion of the Avalon Peninsula. Carbonear General Hospital offers a full range of services including ambulatory care, diagnostic services, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obs/Gyn, Psychiatry and Pediatrics supported by a strong network of allied health professionals.

Carbonear General Hospital’s services include acute in-patient care, chronic disease management, palliative care, respite care, prenatal care, emergency care/patient stabilization and transfer, operating room assist and general practice oncology.

The successful candidate will be expected to share 24 hour on-call services and general practice clinics shared with the other Hospitalists. Previous experience in chemotherapy assessments would be an asset but not required. While there is support from Internal Medicine and Surgical services, the successful candidate will be adept at independent management of patients with multiple co-morbidities. Strong value is placed on communication skills with patients and families.


All applicants must be licensed (full or provisional) to practice by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador and must be granted privileges by Eastern Regional Health Authority. The successful applicant will have received permission from CPSNL to work independently on call.

Hours of Work:35 hours per week plus on call obligations

The financial remuneration for this position includes 5% RRSP contribution, after-hours annual on-call bonus and annual retention bonus in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement between the Government of NL and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association ranging from $173,118 (Step 1) to $209,955 (Step 5). In addition, health benefits are included and an after-hours call stipend added to the base salary.
