The Laboratory Medicine Program of Eastern Health invites applications for the position of permanent full-time Anatomical Pathologist for the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville.

Candidates with experience or sub-specialties in surgical pathology, dermatopathology, breast pathology, gynecological pathology or gastrointestinal, are encouraged to apply.

This is a 2 person pathology unit where the workload responsibilities are shared and sub-specialist consultants are available at the capital city hospitals.

The laboratory currently processes approximately 5000 surgical pathology specimens per year from 2 community hospitals and multiple outlying clinics and approximately 35 medical and medical examiner autopsies. The surgical pathology specimens predominantly consist of GI , breast, gynecology, and skin, along with occasional lymph nodes and other biopsy types.

The successful candidate will work with a diverse, dynamic, and diagnostically excellent anatomic pathology faculty.

We are affiliated with the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Medical School and encourage and support academic interests.

The Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital has 41 acute care beds (including 2 palliative care beds), 44 long-term care beds and 9 ER beds. The long term care patients are located in the Dr. Albert O’Mahony Manor. This is a long term care facility that is attached to the hospital. There are 2 other facilities affiliated with the Clarenville Hospital and located in the town. Coish Place houses 2 Psychiatrists. The facility also offers various community support programs including mental health and addiction services and dialysis. The Bungalow is a 10-bed protective care facility.

Services to patients include: anesthesia, chemotherapy, family practice, general surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ICU/Cardiac, internal medicine, laboratory, palliative care, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, respiratory therapy, ultrasonography and 24-hour emergency (category A). Other services include nursing, nutritional, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pastoral care, social work, diabetic education and speech language pathology. Visiting clinics include: neurology and ophthalmology.  


The successful incumbent must be licensable by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (, have certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anatomic Pathology or certification by the American Board of Pathologists in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP or AP/CP boards) or equivalent and meet the credentialing requirements of Eastern Health.

Excellent communication skills with a team player approach and strong commitment to high quality patient and physician services is also required.

Pay scale is in accordance with the Department of Health (DOH) salary guidelines. The Oncologists/Pathologists salary scale is: Step 1- $232,700 to Step 5 - $262,720.

Retention package of $8,000 after first year of service, $16,000 after 24 months and $24,000 after 36 months.

Free housing accommodations are available for the first 3 months of employment.

Incumbent will receive annually 20 days of vacation plus leave for workshops and other training.
